My CPAP Sleep Apnea Therapy

After months and months of waking with a sense of not having slept well and spending the days trying not to fall asleep, I was starting to wonder what was going on. Going to see the doctor was a good idea, even though I was worried about what I might find out.

When he sent me to a sleep specialist I really started to worry. Finding out that I would need to take a sleep test, requiring me to be connected to a bunch of different monitors to keep tabs on my heart rate, muscles and eye movement, brain activity and breathing was really almost too much. Once I got used to the idea, though, I felt ready for the overnight test.

It wasn’t as bad as I expected. I was surprised that I was able to fall asleep. And when the results came back declaring that I had sleep apnea I was both nervous and relieved. I was worried about what lie ahead and grateful that I finally knew what I needed to start treating.

I was again nervous when I looked into sleep apnea therapy. I was told I need to wear a breathing device while I slept. I have always been a light sleeper and I knew that it would be very difficult if not impossible for me to get used to having a mask on my face while I tried to sleep!

I did some research and found out that I needed to make sure that the mask on my CPAP machine had a good fit so I could be as comfortable as possible. I bought it, brought it home and finally got ready to use it for the first night.

I am not going to lie. It was weird. I woke up often during the first night and for a few nights after that. Pretty soon, though, I got used to it and was able to sleep quite comfortably with it on. This sleep apnea therapy wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated.

I was surprised with how soon I noticed a difference in how I felt during the day. Soon I was waking up feeling refreshed for the first time in a long time. My wife didn’t mind sleeping without my snoring, either! Also, I had so much more energy during the day and didn’t feel like I would fall asleep every time I sat down.

Treating illness can sometimes be frightening, even though you want to improve your condition. This is due largely in part to the fact of it being unknown terrain. The idea of sleeping with an oxygen mask on my face terrified me, but now that I am used to it and I see all the benefits it brings me I am now much more scared to sleep without it than I was at first to sleep with it!
